Digging Down to Build Up

Construction at 1724 Kalorama Rd NW — the site of the future Sitar Next Door arts learning hub — continues to focus on strengthening the foundation that will hold this one-of-a-kind facility.

Last month, we reported that the construction team was reinforcing the building's structure by enlarging the footings around each existing column. Now that work is complete! Each of these footings is at grade-level, meaning these are the floors we will walk on when Sitar Next Door opens in 2024.

Also this week, the construction team is removing the current roof (pictured above) to make space to add two additional floors to the building. Next the crew will install deep foundation elements, called micropiles, around the entire inside perimeter to hold this additional load. Once the micropiles are in, they will begin digging the pit for an elevator to access each floor. Exciting work up and down the entire building!
