About The Project

“Sitar offers children and young people invaluable opportunities for their future.”

— Sitar Parent, 2021

In 2021, it was time for Sitar Arts Center to design our strategic road map for the next 5 years. We began where we always do and invited our community to join us in envisioning Sitar Arts Center's future impact. We heard loud and clear the call to expand the life-changing opportunities, learning, and belonging that so many find at Sitar. At the same time, the latest data from our city reinforced that there are many more families with limited access to affordable and enriching afterschool and summer programs for their children—especially in Wards 1, 4, and 5.

Sitar now has the extraordinary opportunity to meet this call and to grow in place. Our Building the Next Stage capital campaign enables us to purchase Sitar Next Door. The 6,346-square-foot facility anchors the ground floor of a new Jubilee Housing development that creates deeply affordable housing for families. The expansion is directly adjacent to Sitar’s current home at 1700 Kalorama Road NW and ensures that Sitar will grow sustainably.

Sitar Next Door makes it possible to enroll hundreds more school-aged students in our affordable afterschool and summer arts education programs each year. Outfitted with a recording and sound engineering studio, a S.T.E.A.M. lab, flexible performance space, and new arts learning studios, Sitar Next Door prepares us to respond to the call from students ages 16-24 through alternative workforce training programs and meaningful support on their pathways to careers in the creative industries.
